Creating Healthier, Smoke-Free Workplaces in China

In April 2014, the China Tobacco Control Partnership, in collaboration with the School of Public Health at Georgia State University, launched the Tobacco-Free Cities Smoke-Free Business Initiative with the goal of protecting non-smokers in the workplace from exposure to secondhand smoke while also supporting existing smokers in their efforts to quit.

In addition to sharing the successes of the six participating cities—Anshan, Changchun, Hangzhou, Kelamayi, Qingdao and Tangshan—the Partnership also highlights Chinese companies recognized as winners of the Tobacco-Free Cities Smoke-Free Business of Excellence Awards.

As of September 2015, more than 240 businesses were participating, including the offices of China’s biggest online shopping marketplace Alibaba Group. These businesses share a common goal of creating a healthy, smoke-free working environment and supporting employees who smoke to quit.

Award winners are chosen in four categories from each city:

  • Best Smoke-Free Business
  • Best Implementation of a Smoke-Free Policy
  • Best Enforcement of a Smoke-Free Policy, and
  • Best Cessation Support
